2016年8月1日、パリ市はレピュブリック広場の像の清掃を開始した。 2015年のパリ同時多発テロ以降、度重なるテロに対して、花、鉛筆、写真、ろうそく、メッセージ、落書きなど、パリ市民はこのレピュブリック広場に供え続けていた。同時にこの広場はマニフェストの場にもなっていた。 清掃の間、作業員の安全のため、像の周りにバリケードが築かれた。時折、通行人が「なぜ清掃をするのか？」とバリケード越しに質問をしていた。 彼らは何を掃除するのだろうか。 記憶を消去することは可能だろうか。 私たちの記憶はどこにいくのだろうか。 あのテロから10年近くが経過した。これらのイメージは、私たちの忘却を思い出させる。

«Touching the Engraved Names» is a series of photographs centered around eight sites of memory in Greater Paris. It portrays women and men engaged in the ongoing effort to resist forgetting, thus out- lining a shared memory of Paris: mediators who convey the history of Mont-Valérien, passersby who pause before the memorials on Boulevard Richard Lenoir, workers building a war memorial a hundred years after the end of the First World War, children playing beside a neglected monument, archivists pre- serving fragments of our history, and a sculptor imagining a monument dedicated to Italian immigrants.

The images are placed on a piece of furniture shaped like an altar, and a photograph depicting a chrysan- themum greenhouse is hung on the wall.

The work aims to capture a memory in the making—at a time when, as Paris expands, it must also at- tempt to redefine the connection between those who live there and those who have vanished.
