In the series Rings, a photograph of a monument is framed and re-photographed as many times as the monument is years old. The abstract trace left by the original photograph confronts us with the abyss of the task of commemoration: what can we remember? “The problem is not that we remember through photographs, but that we remember only photographs.” — Susan Sontag, Regarding the Pain of Others The first photograph in the series bears the words inscribed on the cenotaph commemorating the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945: “Rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the error.” (安らかに眠ってください 過ちは繰返しませぬから) Once erased by the photographic process, the message gives way to an infinite movement of reproduction, in which photography appears both as its finest embodiment and, at the same time, as the only means capable of bringing that movement to a halt by preserving the memory.
